Julie 2 review :
After last week’s ‘Aksar 2’, we get another erotic thriller this week. Only this one’s so bad and distasteful that it makes the prior release look like a masterpiece in comparison. Indeed, Julie 2 plays like those desi soft porn movies of the 80’s and 90’s where the sex scenes were shot first and then a story as filmsy as its heroine’s lingerie would be woven around it..
Mr. Pahlaj Nihalani, our former sanskaari CBFC chief, was a top producer of that era. His super hit films (‘Mitti aur Sona’ (1988), ‘Shola aur Shabnam’ (1992), ‘Aankhen’ (1993) to name a few) would be introduced on radio channels as “Pahlaj Nihalani ka ek aur dhamaka….”
Today in 2017, we get Nihalani Sahab ka latest dhamaaka – Julie 2, an ‘A’ certified C grade movie he is presenting us after wielding his merciless chop chop scissors on countless films as the CBFC chief. Yea, he’s the same gentleman who didn’t let Bond kiss Monica Belluci passionately in ‘Spectre’ (2015).
In his own Julie 2, we have the titular lead (a voluptuously sexy Raai Laxmi ) stripping down to a full monty state and sleeping half naked with some half dozen guys. After all, she plays a bollywood aspirant who leaves her laaj, sharam aur sanskaar to make it big in the bad bad tinsel town. From a slimy producer (Anant Jog, visibly sloshed) to a Southern superstar (Ravi Kishan from Bhojpur) to a Dubai based Don (Whispering teak wood I dunno who), she does them all.
Finally, Julie dear is bumped off and Inspector Abhijeet (Aditya Srivastava) from the ever running tv series CID investigates her murder. Julie’s caretaker cum makeup artiste (Rati Agnihotri with a clueless expression throughout) narrates her story to Mr. CID and that’s how we get to know Madame Julie through a flashback. By the way, her man friday is a beggar from the street called Ambani. Huh!!!!
If you feel the movie would be an exposè on the dark ugly side of bollywood (like the infinitely better ‘Heroine’ (2012)), banish the thought. Everything here is OTT and senseless. Sample this : a local politician (Pankaj Tripathi, earnest as ever), constantly referred as “Ghar baith ke Delhi chalane wala”, hires a French director called Jean Claude (ahem!!) to make a hindi biopic on his dead wife. Later, a murder is captured live on data card. But who does it and why. We never know!!!!
Director Deepak Shivdasani, himself an 80’s director, appears stuck in that time. Julie 2 has nothing going for it…absolutely nothing. Oh wait there’s one, it certainly exposes the hypocrisy of its presenter. That’s about it!!
